Officials have confirmed that the airplane flown by Steve Fossett, as well as pieces of identifying personal property, have been found by hikers in the Mammoth Lakes area of California.
His body has not been located. (See update 10/2/2008 below.)
Steve Fossett has been missing since September 2007.
The Bellanca 8KCAB (N240R) has been missing since September 3, 2007, when Fossett departed Yerington, Nevada for a local flight, according to the NTSB.
The Safety Board also said that the wreckage was located at about 10,000 feet of elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes, California.

The crash took place just as the aircraft began to lift off and it appears failure to deploy the flaps may be the primary cause, according to published and broadcast accounts.
The plane was operating as Flight JK5022 and bound for the Canary Islands.

The plane crash is reported to be the worst in Spain in 25 years. Initial reports indicate some 19 people have survived the crash of Flight JK5022. Spanair is owned entirely by Scandinavian Airlines, though it is based in Spain.
