An Iran Air Tours Tupolev Tu-154M has crashed in Mashhad, Iran, after a domestic flight that began in Bandar Abbas. The 18-year-old aircraft crashed on landing killing at least 29, perhaps as many as 80. The plane, registration number EP-MCF, once flew in the Aeroflot fleet before repeated sales that eventually put the airliner in the hands of Iran Air Tours, the charter or tour operator subsidiary of Iran Air.

The NTSB says the air traffic controller on duty during the crash of Comair flight 5191 had only slept two hours prior to beginning work. The Safety Board earlier revealed the controller had turned away from the accident aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-200 (or CRJ-100 see our previous story), N431CA, once the plane was cleared to take off.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued five recommendations to the FAA on August 28, 2006, related to safety concerns with the General Electric CF6-80A jet engine. Two of the five issues are considered serious enough that the NTSB has classified them as "urgent."
Questions about the GE CF6-80A first arose during an uncontained engine failure experienced by an American Airlines Boeing B-767 while running up on a test stand at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on June 2, 2006.

The Space Shuttle Mission Management Team decided Saturday afternoon to postpone the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis for at least 24 hours to allow more time for teams to assess ground and flight systems following a strong lighting strike to the lighting protection system at the launch pad on Friday afternoon.

 The New NASA CEV - Orion
Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - AeroSpaceNews.com - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has decided to call the new crew exploration vehicle Orion.
The flagship of NASA's Constellation program to return to the moon and onward to Mars, the Orion spacecraft will eventually replace the Space Shuttle.
A NASA statement claims that Orion will fly with astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014, while the moon mission will follow in 2020.
