Space Shuttle Atlantis has landed safely at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in the darkness just before dawn. The arrival marks the end of STS-135 and the United States' Space Shuttle program. The mission to the International Space Station (ISS) lasted thirteen days for the Atlantis orbiter and her crew of four. The spacecraft touched down 21 July 2011 at approximately 5:57 a.m. (ET) with her wheels stopping by about 5:58 a.m. (ET)
Flying Atlantis on this historic mission were Shuttle Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim. The focus of STS-135 was to deliver supplies to the ISS that will help sustain its operation in the post-shuttle era. There is no spacecraft, manned or unmanned, currently available that can lift the payloads of a Space Shuttle.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis has launched on its and the space shuttle's final flight. Despite concerns over weather, and a last minute glitch that forced a brief hold, the shuttle launched just a couple moments late at NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39A at 11:29 am EDT on 8 July 2011.
Video of the historic launch was somewhat marred by the clouds that threatened the launch but the last orbiter to fly in the shuttle program was International Space Station bound with her crew and payload.

NASA says fueling of Space Shuttle Atlantis’s external fuel tank with more than 500,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen began on time at NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39A at 2:01 a.m. EDT 8 July 2011.
The space agency says the launch team will closely monitor the weather throughout the process. Weather remains at a 30 percent chance of favorable weather for liftoff at 11:26 a.m. Teams are not working any issues that would delay the launch, according to NASA.

Astronomers have
discovered a new class of Jupiter-sized planets floating alone in the
dark of space, away from the light of a star. The team believes these
lone worlds probably were ejected from developing planetary systems.
According to a statement released by NASA, 18 May 2011, the discovery is based on a joint Japan-New Zealand survey that
scanned the center of the Milky Way galaxy during 2006 and 2007,
revealing evidence for up to 10 free-floating planets roughly the
mass of Jupiter. Also known as orphan planets, these objects are
difficult to spot, and had gone undetected until now. The planets are
located at an average approximate distance of 10,000 to 20,000 light
years from Earth.
