An Australian Shepherd is captured as it leaps into the air in hot pursuit of a bright red tennis ball on a sunset-bathed beach at Rincon, California, September, 2008.
This beautiful Aussie is a young female called Charlie. She had one striking blue eye and a balanced, almost classic conformation, though we are not expert enough to know if she fits the Australian Shepherd breed standard. By classic we mean timeless beauty. There was much to admire in her athleticism, keen interest in all around her and obvious intelligence. She was clearly also a much loved and happy girl.
We think this dog picture captures the magic of playing in the natural world with your dog. See more pictures of Charlie by clicking her picture.

A puppy mill in West Virginia has turned over approximately 1,000 dogs and puppies in a rescue mission organized and videotape by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
The Parkersburg-based breeder surrendered the dogs on 23 August and agreed to never operate a dog breeding business again, according to an account published on the HSUS website.
Among the dog breeds found are the Daschund, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Jack (Parson) Russel Terrier, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The puppy mill produced new litters as recently as the day of the rescue.
An eyewitness speaking on the video says that there was a very strong smell of ammonia and that tests for ammonia indicated a strong presence.

The facts are still sketchy in a story about a baby girl abandoned by her mother just hours after she was born. Published reports have claimed that the baby was found alone by a dog, called China, picked-up, and taken to safety to sleep with her puppies.
Other reports indicate that the mother abandoned the child with the dog in the first place. Regardless, what appears to be certain is that the newborn was found safe in the care of the dog nestled next to the dog's puppies.
This all took place near La Plata, Argentina, which is about 40 miles south of Buenos Aires. The child was abandoned during winter weather in Argentina and was at some risk due to the cold, but not freezing conditions.

Yoda, a Downers Grove cat is making animal news all over the world. The little feline is well, unusual. Instead of the normal two ears, Yoda has four ear flaps.
The strange cat belongs to Ted Rock and his wife Valerie Rock. Published reports say the extra ears are simply flaps of skin caused by a birth defect.
This is yet another example of animal adoption bringing the unexpected elements into someone's life.

A Chocolate Labrador Retriever is captured as it races across a sunset-drenched beach at Rincon, California, in January, 2008.
The happy dog was running back and forth time and again, clearly enjoying the fresh air, sea birds and breaking surf. This picture is one of the many moments when the Lab had all four paws off the ground, literally flying above the sand.
We think this dog picture captures the primal pleasure of playing in the natural world with your dog.
