Boeing 787 Dreamliner Wins Collier Trophy
Boeing says their 787 Dreamliner has won the 2011 Robert J. Collier Trophy. The award places the ultra fuel-efficient Dreamliner in an exclusive group of pioneers that revolutionized air travel, according to the airplane builder.
"We were very pleased with this year's slate of nominations - all of them were impressive, inspirational, and innovative and certainly represent the future of aviation and aerospace," said Walter Boyne, Chairman of the National Aeronautic Association and Chairman of the Selection Committee. "We congratulate Boeing on their great accomplishment with the 787."

There are published unconfirmed reports that the most recent launch of a Soyuz-2 unmanned rocket has ended in failure. Apparently, at approximately seven minutes after launch from the Plesetsk spaceport, there was a malfunction aboard the Soyuz third stage.
Reports say the cargo, a mixed military/civilian use Meridian satellite, was lost. It appears the remains of the spacecraft returned to Earth near Tobolsk, Siberia.

Earth-size planets orbiting a sun-like star outside our solar system have been discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. According to the space agency, the planets, called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are too close to their
star to be in the so-called habitable zone where liquid water could
exist on a planet's surface, but they are the smallest exoplanets
ever confirmed around a star like our sun.
NASA says the discovery marks an important milestone in the ultimate
search for planets like Earth. The new planets are thought to be
rocky. Kepler-20e is slightly smaller than Venus, measuring 0.87
times the radius of Earth. Kepler-20f is slightly larger than Earth,
measuring 1.03 times its radius. Both planets reside in a five-planet
system called Kepler-20, approximately 1,000 light-years away in the
constellation Lyra.

NASA announced that their Flight Engineer Don Pettit, Russian Soyuz Commander Oleg
Kononenko and European Space Agency Flight Engineer Andre Kuipers of
the Netherlands are set to launch to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 7:16 a.m. CST on
Wednesday, 21 December 2011 (7:16 p.m. local time).

North Korea's state-run television has announced that Kim Jong-il is dead. According to the announcement, Mr. Kim died at the age of 69 while on a train trip somewhere outside the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
Two versions of Mr. Kim's death have been offered by the official news agency. At first it was said he died of mental and physical over-work. However, later the agency claimed it was a heart attack.
Unsurprisingly, both South Korea and Japan have heightened their military readiness, according to reports. |
