Fossett and Virgin Global Flyer Landed After In-Flight Emergency - Record Broken By Ultimate Flight Team

DIVERTED: Landed, Bournemouth - Record Broken! - That's the status reported by Steve Fossett's Virgin Global Flyer Ultimate Flight Team as we go to press. Not much is available in the way of detail at the moment. The team does say that he declared an emergency due to a generator failure and the loss of electrical power.

He also blew two tires on landing at Bournemouth, England, but he and the Scaled Composites-built Virgin Global Flyer are undamaged.

According to a statement issued by the team, Fossett and the Virgin Global Flyer landed just before sunset with a heavily iced windshield restricting his view ahead. They say he broke the prior record held by Voyager when he crossed over Shannon, Ireland, and ultimately flew 26,389.3 miles over some 76 hours 45 minutes.
