Initial reports indicate all passengers and crew escaped the plane alive.

The Boeing plane is powered by a pair of CFM56-7 jet engines. Some media outlets report the fire began in the left or number 1 engine. Representatives of Boeing and engine maker CFM are on the way to Okinawa to take part in the investigation.

CFM International issued a statement saying "Based on the engine fleet's service history, we are not aware of operational issues that would hazard the continued safe flight of aircraft powered by these engines." CFM also claims the engine type has accumulated more then 67 million flight hours and enjoys a dispatch reliability rate of 99.976 percent.
