Video: Helms Reacts to Oil Spill
Helms talked more about oil well safety at a lunch at the Minot Air Force Base today. Every well site in the state must pass through a permit process before any work can begin. That was the case here and in fact, this site had many requirements that had to first be met like a dike built up around it. Helms says that, paired with a good response was key to handling the situation... (Lynn Helms - ND Mineral Resources Dept. Dir.) "We practice these scenarios pretty frequently and run through them in discussions. We have it down pretty well how to respond and have good regulations in place. We will go back after this one is over though and I bet we will learn something." The oil was spilling out of the site at a rate of about 100 barrels an hour.
