Chain of Memories from Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 2 is a complete 3D remake of the original Game Boy Advance release from 2004. The Prologue The story begins with Sora, Donald and Goofy wandering through endless fields. Eventually, they come to a crossroad. Standing in the crossroads, Sora gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends.
From the distance, a mysterious man approaches from one of the roads. "Ahead lies something you need," he says, "but to claim it you must lose something dear." The man vanishes, revealing a single path that leads to the eery Castle Oblivion, which resembles a girl's drawing.
The Story After this encounter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go their separate ways. Soon, on a night when his island home is besieged by a mysterious storm, Sora is whisked away to an unfamiliar burg known as Traverse Town. There he meets Donald and Goofy, and learns that there are strange things happening in the world.
Donald and Goofy set off to look for their missing king, and Sora joins them to search for his lost friend, Riku. After a long journey that takes them across numerous worlds, Sora and friends finally find Riku and the lost king. But to save all the worlds, Sora must use his Keyblade to close the door to darkness, even though Riku and the king are on the other side. Believing the king's parting words -- there will always be a door to the light -- Sora locks the door, and the trio sets out on yet another journey.
The Characters The cast of Chain of Memories combines Kingdom Hearts characters with familiar Disney faces. Sora, is a 14-year-old boy and the hero of this tale. Although a little naive, Sora has an uncommon sense of justice. On his journey, Sora is accompanied by Donald, a court wizard who shares a striking resemblance to Donald the Duck of Disney fame, and the clumsy, easy-going captain of the Disney Castle Royal Knights, Goofy.
Other characters include the mysterious, shrouded man from the crossroads; Sora's lost friend, Riku, a 15-year-old boy who is cool and collected; the lost King, who bares a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse; and Kairi, a 14-year-old girl who's friends with Sora and Riku. Almost more strange than the man at the crossroads, a mysterious girl, Namine, draws pictures inside Castle Oblivion under close surveillance of an evil organization. As the story alludes, she may hold the key to Sora's most special memories.

Pros: A full 3-D remake of the GBA classic Great Voice Acting
Cons: Retains the card battle system A few years too late.
With that said KH:CoM is a must own game if you already have Kingdom Hearts 1&2 for the PS2 and have never picked up the GBA original, or if you have the original and loved it, pick this up too, its amazing in 3-D.
Gameplay wise its exactly like the GBA game you use cards to battle, It very different from what KH 1&2 fans are used to, but the learning curve isn't to steep and a person should have it down within the first few floors of Castle Oblivion, still like many others, I would have preferd the original battle system...
Graphically KH:CoM is a step up from KH, but not quite as good as KH 2, the environments are shockingly different from KH they are stripped down, and feel rather empty, This KH is lacking a certain flare that KH1 had that captivated me so years ago.
My Final thoughts: I find it very pleasing that the original voice actor who plays Sora has came back a 3rd time to reprise his role, altho he sounds too old for the young Sora portrayed in this game, it would have fitted perfectly in KH2.
Prise wise, this game is definitely worth it, new games for the PS2 are still ringing in @40-50 dollars, while this one is only 30, I should mention that this game was actually bundled with the the final mix version of KH2 in Japan, this was not ment to be a stand alone game and it kinda shows here, but still a perfect example of a Kingdom Hearts game even though its not as amazing as Kingdom Hearts was, its still one for the collection ;)

The Kingdom Hearts series is synonymous with fun gameplay, eye-catching environments and an interesting story. Unfortunately, Square/Enix & co. decided to throw one third of that mix out the window when they made this game. This game (which is a remake of the Game Boy Advance title Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories) features a truly odd spin on combat, in which cards are required to do ANYTHING in battle. You can't even swing your Keyblade without using cards to make that happen! It hampers the fun, action-intensive element of combat with a whole lot of fumbling around to get the right cards lined up at the right time.
The game still features pretty (if somewhat limited) scenery, and of course it's great to fill those pesky story-gaps that were left between KH and KH2...but why did they have to do so in some sort of bizarre Yu-Gi-Oh card-flinging fashion?? I'm sure there's those out there who enjoy this change but I feel that it's an unnecessary revamp of gameplay that detracts from the overall experience, instead of adding to it. In a 3-D world with full range of motion, restricting even your most basic attacks to what cards you have in hand is ridiculous. Imagine...you're in mid-air, pounding some justice into an enemy, when suddenly you run out of cards and can't do much of anything until you've had a chance to run away a bit and reload your deck.
I do like the story and I will get as much use out of the game as I can, but I really don't like the changes. It's like having a driving game which you control with your abdominal muscles, or a facial-gesture-controlled martial arts combat game...an unneccesary amount of abstraction from the natural jumping-dodging-and-swinging-my-weapon-at-lightning-speed action/adventure vibe.

This is the best KH game out there! The story is this, Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy are chasing Pluto (the dog) in a big wide open field.The cutscene then cuts to nighttime where we see Sora standing at crossroads thinking of his lost friends. A man wearing a black coat appears behind Sora and tells him of a strange place. Sora begins to walk down the road and finds himself in front of a huge castle. This mighty fortress known as Castle Oblivion is where the game takes place besides the Disney worlds. Sora and friends step inside the castle talking about how they all have the same feeling that their friends would be in Castle Oblivion. The man appears again and tells Sora that in Castle Oblivion "To find is to lose and to lose is to find." The man gives Sora a card made from his memories and the game begins. There are 3 key differences in this game, the most notable being the battle system. You can no longer just hit the x button over and over to attack. Now you have a certain number of cards to attack with and when you run out you can't attack again until you reload your deck. Another thing is that Donald and Goofy are no longer at Sora's side to help him fight. They are special cards in this game that you must pick up to have them appear for a short while. One final key difference is that you pick which attribute you want to level up now rather than the computer pick one for you. Once you beat Sora's story mode your not even done yet. After your back at the main menu an option called "reverse/rebirth" is available. Select this option to begin Riku's story mode. Riku's story mode is different from Sora's story mode in these ways: Riku can't customize his deck, Riku doesn't have to reload his deck, the main enemy is different, and rather than Going to the top of the castle like Sora, Riku has to go to the bottom of the castle. So here's my summary. story: 10/10. Graphics: 8/10. Gameplay: 10/10. Overall: 9.5/10. Seriously go pick this up now, it's much better than than the GBA version.

When I first started playing Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, I was a little hesitant with the new fighting system. But after getting used to it, I found it very invigorating and it turned out to be a great move on SE's part. This game bridges the gap between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, and makes you really understand what is going on at the beginning of KH2. The added cut scenes and transition to PS2 has made the game extremely enjoyable, adding replay value over the original. Whether you've played the GBA version or not, I would recommend getting this game. If you love the other 2 games in the series, then this is a must have.

I think this game just sucks and the reason Kingdom Hearts was a good game to begin with was the battle system.They completely changed the battle system making you use cards.Square Enix and Disney just destroyed this game for me,because the only thing I like from the Kingdom Hearts series is the original battle system.You take the original battle system away,and this game is garbage plain and simple.
The story to the Kingdom Hearts series is meh The characters in Kingdom Hearts is meh The fighting system in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 is priceless,but this game is a joke
I'm not sure why cards are in the game,but it really is a slap in the face to the series.They should have left this game alone and worked on something different.If you buy this game I would recommend you sell it and get a better game instead.If you managed to stay away from buying this game and are reading the reviews take my advice and get something else.Spend the money you could use on this game for Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 instead if you don't already have them.You really are better off saving your money and ignoring this game like it never existed.I don't think this game deserves any attention at all,which is my main reason for writing this review.If people keep buying this game I'm almost certain another one of these awful games will exist in the future.
